Not Bad for a Kid's Movie! - Wynchr
My husband and I watched without any real expectations and found it to be pretty entertaining overall. The set was pretty elaborate and the storyline was fairly coherent. We were sad that Bill Murray was the bad guy, but he did such a good job that we can't really complain. The only thing we didn't understand was why Ember was abandoned or closed off. I guess I'll have to read the book at some point :) Enjoy! So good we watched it twice - marypoppins
Our family watched this movie again the very next day, we loved it so much. This is a complex tale of an underground city satisfied with its own engineering accomplishments and unwilling to admit that its infrastructure is falling apart. Two curious kids take on the challenge of figuring out why the city is falling apart and what are the alternatives to just watching it happen. Unlike grown-up post-apocalyptic movies (or even some children's fantasy movies like The Golden Compass), it does not have a large, corrupt state that aims to repress curiosity or dissent. Instead, the bad guy is a fat, incompetent Bill Murray. This makes the movie less scary than it could be, and invites the audience to focus on the kids' quest. Finally, the aesthetics of the film have a dark, homespun, organic feel - everyone is making do with what they have - machines are patched together and repaired with whatever scrap is around, people wear homemade sweaters pinned together, the city is as dark and dirty as you can expect from their constrained situation, but illuminated by the citizens' charming yet delusional faith in their capacity to survive. We are definitely going to read the books!Meh. - moviegenius
I'm going to be honest with you on something, this movie was close to being a two out of 5. However, it wasn't a two out of five. Shortly after I saw the movie, I bought the book and I didn't even finish reading it. It was so boring. There were few interesting things in this movie, but some of the things in it were fun to watch. So, this is a film that I sort of recommend. The kids might not like it with their small attention span and all. The adults just barely might like it enough to recommend it to someone on this planet of ours.
