Never Want to go to India - hometheater
I have never wanted to go to India and watching this movie only reinforced that.
This movie is not what I expected at all - I wish I had read all the comments before zipping it.
If you don't mind seeing violence and child abuse and the horrible conditions of poor orphaned children in India, you may enjoy this movie more than I did. It is a good movie - well portrayed and acted and deserving of the awards it won.
The movie was well done with the 'Who Want's to be a Millionaire' game show intertwined with the flashbacks and the underlying romance. But the cruelty in the movie is hard to watch.
The best part of this movie is the dance at the end so be sure to watch it.Slumdog Millionaire - RogerDaniels
"Slumdog Millionaire" has a lot of things going for it. It’s an expertly crafted piece of entertainment. Danny Boyle’s directing strengths show in the visceral, kinetic energy that the film exhibits. The ambitions and dreams of the characters flow off the screen and become the desires of the audience. We’re thrilled when the characters are thrilled. We triumph when they triumph. This is where the talent of the cast shows, especially Dev Patel as Jamal. Patel seems completely genuine in his portrayal of a poverty-stricken orphan and allows the simple honesty and charm of the character to enthrall the audience. Patel has the acting chops to be a leading man, for he commands the attention of the audience, even off of the face of gorgeous eye-candy Freida Pinto. "Slumdog Millionaire" flows like a torrent, never dropping its relentless pace towards the satisfying climax. And when that climax comes, the entire audience will celebrate the glorious triumph of Jamal along with you. This is a classic rags-to-riches story, combining Dickensian storytelling with nuanced filmmaking. It contains everything audiences want in a film, so I won’t be surprised on February 22nd when it takes home the Best Picture Oscar. "Slumdog Millionaire" may not have been as mind-blowing as I expected it to be, but it’s a terrific watch and from what I’ve seen, everyone else seems to think so too.Like an Indian Dickens tale... - cathyottawa
...rather than the American Dream, as swissguy likens it to.
This was a fun movie, despite the bleak setting. We follow the lives of three street kids - "slumdogs" as they're called in India, Jamal, his brother Salim, and Latika.
The main focus is on Jamal, who will go on the be the contestant on the millionaire show.
It's a hard life for these three, orphaned young, living in slums and dumps, before being turned into beggers (in a Dickens like scenario reminiscent of Fagin and his gang), and finally surviving by their own hard earned street smarts.
We have a great ensemble cast here of young kids (who were reportedly actually recruited from real Indian street kids), rather than one standout performance, which explains why this film is scooping up best picture awards, but being all but ignored for acting.
It's a film about perseverance, determination, and triumph over adversity. But these aren't squeaky clean characters, and this is also about surviving by your wits, and being a product of your environment and upbringing.
It has an authentic feel, due in no small part to the great cast, and is not Bollywood at all, despite what some other reviewers think. Danny Boyle of Trainspotting fame directed a Hollywood film set in India, not a Bollywood film. The only tip of the hat to Bollywood is a Bollywood dance during the closing credits.
