The Reader
Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road) delivers a dynamic performance in this "tale of eroticism, secrecy and guilt" (Claudia Puig, USA Today) set in turbulent post-Nazi Germany. Bringing to life the celebrated international novel, Winslet is riveting as Hanna Schmitz - a lonely, working-class woman who experiences a brief but intense affair with a teenage boy. Years later they meet again: Hanna now a defendant in a notorious case and her ex-lover, now a law student, holding the secret to her salvation. Directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and featuring Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) as the grown man still reeling from Hanna's influence, The Reader is a "moving, romantic and poignant story" (Roger Friendman, Fox News) about the difficult distance between truth and reconciliation.

Given the hype, a mildly disappointing foray into German guilt with a faintly preposterous 'reveal' . While I could watch Kate Winslet peel potatoes for 2 hours I wasn't actually carried along by its dull introduction to the storyline.
A controversial love story which is well acted and told in great sequence. What starts out as an unconventional tale of love escalates into an emotionally drawn journey between the unlikely pair.
It wasn't until the last hour that I was glued to the screen and awe inspired at Winslets portrayal of an illiturate woman learning to read. That a light bulb clicked on to why Winslet won an Oscar.Amazing! - farquh
Put this on your 'need to see' list.
It works on many levels. As a morality tale, a love story, and even a time period piece.
All three principal actors are great, and their performances leave lasting impressions that will remain long after viewing.
The story itself, while concerning a complex subject like the holocaust, is actually about Human Nature and the things we will do to a love one when we feel hurt and abandoned.
The final scene with Fiennes and Olin really hammer home the film's mark in my opinion.
Also, watch the deleted scenes. Usually, when a DVD has deleted scenes, it is easily understood why those scenes were cut and didn't make the picture. These deleted scenes I wish were there. I think they enhance the story.A must see - Nikki
A slow moving but absorbing story of sexual awakening and moral dilemmas. It is more of a coming-of-age film than historical drama, with strong performances from Kate Winslet and newcomer David Kross.
The Reader is a film that cannot be missed. Beautifully shot and filmed, The Reader is magnificent.
