Director John Huston, fresh from his The Maltese Falcon success, includes a cameo role for his father Walter, just as did in Falcon. And Max Steiner's powerful music underscores the film's driving emotional force.

What a yarn. Olivia DeHavilland is married to Dennis Morgan, who is in love with Olivia's vampy sister Bette Davis, who is engaged to boring do-gooder George Brent. Bette and Dennis elope and this movie is the fallout. Everyone is at his melodramatic best, suffering up a storm. The supporting cast is nothing to sneeze at: Charles Coburn, Billie Burke, and Hattie MacDaniel are all there pitching in and chewing scenery with the four leads. This movie isn't a masterpiece. It's not The Maltese Falcon. But it zips right along and is as enjoyable as it is predictable. It's one of those second-tier classics that old movie buffs crave.
