Shameless Self-Promotion and Fear Mongering! - LadyBugAbode
This movie was not at all what we expected. My whole family was tremendously disappointed. Robert Redford narrates less than half of the film. Most of the narration is done by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who went down the Colorado River.
Our biggest issue with this movie is that it’s presented like a documentary, but in fact, it’s just one big advertisement for the book that Kennedy is writing.
The focus was very much on doom and gloom. I’m all for awareness of environmental issues, but I’m not into fear-mongering. The message was very clear: “There are too many people, we’re all greedy water-wasters, and we’re doomed from the get-go.” At the very end, *during the credits*, they give pathetic “solutions” to reduce water consumption (using low-flow shower heads, washing our cars with a hose that has an on and off switch, more efficient irrigation systems, etc.) that most of us are already doing and which places more blame on the average consumer and not on industry. Then they promote their website, making sure to mention it’s updated frequently. Gag me!
The film focused on the people boating down the river almost as much as the river itself. We were not at all interested in the Kennedy family, but would have preferred to know more about the wildlife and history of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon.
We felt like we learned very little in watching this movie. The only reason we give it two stars is because the scenery is beautiful.Informative - gdott4
My wife and I really enjoyed watching this DVD. Yes it could have been longer and more indepth here in a home-viewing format, but all in all it was well done. The pictures were amazing - parts of the canyon that most of us couldn't see (although having been there in person no picture will ever do it complete justice - it is something that you have to see with your own eyes). Some of the facts gleaned were very interesting. It is scary sometimes how much we can change the environment. It is time that more of us become custodians of it, instead of taking it for granted. All in all worth a watch.
