Closing the Ring

Moving seamlessly through time, this lush epic follows a beautiful 1940's Michigan girl (Barton) secretly married to a WWII pilot who crashes in the hills near Belfast, Ireland. Fifty years later his wedding ring resurfaces - along with the smoldering secrets that have kept the widow (MacLaine), her estranged daughter (Campbell) and devoted friend (Plummer) each from finding true love.

Multi layered and worth it - Sooze
What a gem - I think we only ziplisted this because Pete Postlethwaite was in it - but my did we get a treat. A star studded cast and great direction (Attenborough) - a fairly tangled start so stick with it as the film bobs between eras and locations at a great rate of knots. A beautiful tale well told. I had set out with an idea about what this movie would be, waiting for the huge 'secret' to be revealed. I won't give it away, but the build-up was unneccissary. Not only was the plot a let down, but the characters really failed to draw the audience in to actually care about them.
Moreover, the acting was... well... dismal. Almost cringe-worthy at times.

At 83 years of age, Richard Attenborough can still make a damned fine movie. This is an epic love story that spans almost half a century. Yes, it is slow moving, but the cinamatography is beautiful, the acting very good, the story--well, a bit of a stretch but I did buy into it. The really remarkable thing about this film is the superb acting by the young people in the cast--none of whom I'm familair with, but all of whom just stunned me with the the truthfulness and commitment of their performances. Nor is the story itlself all fuzziness and sunshine: there are glimpses into the dark corners of the human heart as well. One thing worth taking from this film is that there are both healthy and unhealthy kinds of love, and that there's a difference between youthful love and grown-up love. As we grow up, our love needs to mature as well, or the result could be tragic.
