Coraline
From the Director of The Nightmare Before Christmas comes a visually stunning stop-motion animated feature!
Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads her into a world that's just like her own... but better! But when this fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her "other" Mother tries to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness and bravery to get home.
Critics are hailing Coraline as "A remarkable feat of imagination." (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times).

Steeped in Freudian psychology and filled with appropriately macabre prepubescent imagery, "Coraline" is one of the more complex animated features I’ve seen thus far. As Coraline struggles to break free from the suffocating demands of her increasingly malevolent “other” mother an intense psychodrama unfolds in which childish fantasies give way to troubled nightmares: an adorable circus of dancing mice morphs into a pack of slinking rats, a childish snow globe turns into an icy prison, and an enchanted garden becomes a tangle of horrors. But, in keeping with the film’s underlying subtext of growth and maturation, a talking feline familiar will provide the clear voice of reason while a trio of unhappy ghosts will kindle a newfound sense of responsibility. Of course no work that offers more than a passing nod to Sigmund and Anna would be complete without a few sexual metaphors; an outrageous burlesque show staged by a pair of buxom grannies fits the bill perfectly and heralds our diminutive protagonist’s impending adolescence.Coraline - julianrjh27
This is a very entertaining, witty and surprisingly dark children's movie that I would argue appeals more to adults than children.
The story itself is shockingly dark and subversive. Coraline, a young girl neglected by her work-obsessed parents, moves to an old house and discovers her "other family," an exact replica of her circumstances only idyllic... if you can get past her "other family" having buttons for eyes.
It's hard to reveal more without spoiling many of the movie's beans, and it's best to experience this with minimal exposure. The animation is absolutely fantastic and engaging - the characters are humanistic and expressive and the voice work is first-rate. The screenplay is also very well-done, charming without negating its dark overtones. It reminded me quite a bit of "Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach," these fantastic voyages throughout animation that remind you of the wonderment of your younger years without necessitating a complete shutdown of your intellect and amassed experiences through adulthood.Strange and not for everyone - pezpimp
This movie is not like any other you have seen. The premise is a little strange as Coraline finds an alternate world in her new house. Although interesting at parts and the last half hour makes up for the first hours, overall the film did not do a great job of developing the characters thus you don't really relate or care much for them. The animation isn't great either. Overall, I did not really enjoy it.
