My Zinc Bed
Attraction. Temptation. Addiction.
Adapted from the bewitching play by renowned writer David Hare (Academy Award-nominee for The Hours), My Zinc Bed is a searing examination of passion, obsession, and the search for redemption. This intimate film centers on young poet Paul (Paddy Considine), a recovering alcoholic committed to AA; billionaire businessman Victor (Jonathan Pryce), who befriends and employs him; and Victor's young wife Elsa (Uma Thurman), who has adopted a mind-over-matter approach to overcoming her own struggles with addiction. The story builds in intensity over the course of a single summer, as Victor offers up a series of temptations that alter Paul's chosen course of treatment, and Paul and Elsa begin a romantic entanglement that exposes their inner demons and challenges their beliefs. With wit, drama, and pathos, My Zinc Bed explores themes of faith, friendship, and fidelity with deep emotional resonance that heightens the story from beginning to end.

I haven't seen the play that this film was adapted from but for me it felt like the filmmaker did a literal translation and nothing more. Run of the mill camera work, locations etc. There was way too much dialogue and it didn't make me 'feel' anything for the characters at all. It seems rather that the actors accomplished a great deal by memorizing it all. All three leads I like very much and it seems like they were wasted on this. Maybe this would have been better as a short? I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but after seeing the poster and the title...hmmm I was expecting something more.Interesting movie - kedar
This was not a block buster movie, but it was ok. The dialog was fairly witty and entertaining. But it was pretty predictable in terms of plot. Uma Thurman's accent was not very believable in my opinion. It was definitely worth renting this movie, but I would not have paid full price in a theatre to see it.
