The Informers
From the Author of "American Psycho" and "Less Than Zero"
A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980s Los Angeles, centered on an array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs—and one another—with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

Bret Easton Ellis had Less Than Zero. Great.
...and then nothing else.
He holds the world record for worst book I've ever read (American Psycho, sadly, the movie was better)
This movie is a perfect example of no matter how many stars you try to jam into it, if the story blows, the movie blows.
This is just a lame attempt at the "different lives intersecting at different points" script. but most of the "intersections" are happenstance and random, having nothing with moving the plot forward. (i.e. one intersection is a guy selling cocaine to another guy)
He tried to write in things that were happening in the 80's just as the emergence of AIDS but it was written far too obvious and clumsy. It was more of a distraction than anything.
I chalk this one up to "yet another hour and a half I'll never get back.

I kind of liked this movie. It was slow in the beginning, and it was hard to know what was going on. There is no humour in the film, so it's kind of hard to continue watching. This movie explores loose values, drugs, sleeping around, kidnapping. There are some interesting scenes. The most interesting of the whole film is the role played by Brad Renfro. I feel like he could have done a whole movie based on him. He was so interesting and a good watch, and definitely different from every character in the film.Spoiler - The Informers is a band - Steady
I liked this movie. An inside look at the seedier side of Los Angeles during the 1980’s. Lots of characters and subplots but the film is not difficult to follow. All the actors do a great job. Another brilliant performance by Mickey Rourke. We see high life and low life losers and I don’t think anyone in the movie comes out ahead and most of them go farther down the pipe. Seemed to me quite realistic as to what it could have been like in this environment in the 80’s. AIDS is spreading but no one really knows much about it to the point where they are ignorant of their drug and sex habits.
Based on Brett Easton Ellis' short stories, so you know there aren’t going to many laughs.
