Forbidden Hollywood Collection: Volume 2 - Three on a Match / Female (Double Feature)
Classic films that offer a rare glimpse at a lose era of provocative filmmaking.
Illicit sex. Glorified vice. Crime that pays. "You can't do that" said the film industry's Production Code. But in the pre-Code era, Hollywood could - and did - with lots of classic style.
Included on this disc:
Three on a Match (1932, 63 mins)
Platinum-haired Bette Davis stars in this searing tale of adultery.
Female (1933, 60 mins)
Ruth Chatterton stars as a tycoon who buys herself boy toys.

Don't expect classics here. These were short and fast productions, churned out for quick money, but with some good talent--eg. Michael Curtiz, director of Casablanca directs Female. Female is a remarkable social document that starts with a feminist message and then disintegrates. Good acting. Three on a Match gives the leads ample opportunity to chew up the scenery. Fun. With a "shocking" ending.Good starts, bad finishes - RobBC
THREE: A tired and predictable morality play with a cloyingly sweet ending (the child actor is pretty good, I must admit) but with the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Joan Blondell and Bette Davis who can resist? FEMALE: The battle of the sexes is reversed when a female boss offers male employees a promotion by way of the bedroom. But she goes back to being a girl when a macho loner enters her life.
