Forbidden Hollywood Collection: Volume 2 - Night Nurse
Classic films that offer a rare glimpse at a lose era of provocative filmmaking.
Illicit sex. Glorified vice. Crime that pays. "You can't do that" said the film industry's Production Code. But in the pre-Code era, Hollywood could - and did - with lots of classic style.
Included on this disc:
Night Nurse (1931, 72 mins)
Barbara Stanwyck defies sinister Clark Gable to protect an endangered child.

Night Nurse (1931) featuring Barbara Stanwyck and a 'stache-less Clark Gable is one of those excessively titillating products of the "pre-code" era wherein anything goes except (in this case) the baby with the bath water. The bonus materials include an interview with international treasure Hugh Hefner among other experts who lavish praise on the filmmakers of the period for their self-conscious pushing of the envelope, though one or two of these do acknowledge that the Hays Code did eventually force Tinseltown to be more creative, whereafter it's chief administrator Joseph Breen presided over by far the greater part of Hollywood's Golden Age. Incidentally, the rather dark story is leavened by the comic antics of an occasional bootlegger played by Ben Lyon and the hard-boiled banter of Stanwyck confidante Joan Blondell. (Three-and-a-half out of five.)
