The Sky Crawlers (Sukai kurora)
Every day could be your last. Live life like there's no tomorrow.
From Mamoru Oshii, the world-acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell comes an award-winning story of an exciting but endless war with heroes too young to understand the meaning of their battles. A group of eternally young fighter pilots known as Kildren experience the sudden loss of innocence as they battle the enemy in astonishing dogfights above the clouds. With his only childhood memory consisting of intense flight training, the fearless teenage pilot Yuichi's dogfights coexist with his struggle to find his missing past. When his beautiful, young female commander Suito is reluctant to discuss the fate of the pilot that Yuichi is replacing - or the strangely perfect condition of that pilot's former aircraft - Yuichi's curiosity becomes heightened.

This was my first anime movie and I enjoyed it; the graphics and CGI were good and the story was too. It's a modern story about a corporate war with WWII-style air battles. And the anime style makes more sense when you realize what one of the issues in the movie is. The story raises some interesting issues, but they are dealt with in a cursory manner; given its length they could have delved into some of them a little more deeply. Still, some food for thought. You'll either love it or be bored by it. Definitely a different night in.Did not do it for me. - SpagettiWestern
After having seen the DVD trailers, I was excited about the cool anime and ferocious dogfight scenes. Unfortunately that only occurs in about 5 minutes of the movie. The rest is about the mundane lives of the pilots. VERY slow pace. Maybe they were trying to convey the experiences of real life fighter pilots who go through days of waiting coupled with 5 minutes of horror in the sklies. If so, it could have been done in a fashion that did not make me fall asleep. The Skycrawlers - AppsScraps
Hiroshi Mori wrote the original story and book back in 2001, which Kenji Tsuruta then animated. The story is set in an alternative historical time – vaguely reminiscent of Europe in World War II – and concerns Kildren, genetically engineered teenagers who never die until shot down in an air battle. At its core this film examines an essential truth about life and whether knowing you will live forever, makes living worth it or not. This theme is explored in simply gorgeous detail through 122 minutes of magnificent anime. Directed by the genius of Mamoru Oshii, The Sky Crawlers is one of the most subtlety perfect movies – in any genre – in a long, long time. It is, in a word, a masterpiece.
My rating, a rare, 10 out of 10.
