Cheri
Indulge in Cheri, the seductive and provocative drama about a scandalous love affair, set during the opulent decadence of pre-World War I Paris starring award winners Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates (Best Actress Oscar, Misery, 1990). The ravishing Lea (Pfeiffer), famed courtesan to the rich and famous, is contemplating her retirement, when her archrival (Bates) asks her to teach her spoiled nineteen-year-old son Cheri about women.
It's an adventure that becomes a heated and passionate affair that results in power struggles over sex, money, age and society - and unexpectedly, love itself - as a boy who refuses to grow up collides with a women who realizes she cannot stay young forever.

Beautiful heartbreaking subtle film - filmcmnt
I am really surprised by the negative reviews here. My wife and I both found this movie intensely engaging and really heartbreaking. It's by the same writing/directing team that created Dangerous Liasions many years back, the film that really launched Michelle Pfeiffer into a greater category of stardom. It's a lovely reunion for the three here, since Pfeiffer, while still as beautiful, plays a woman whose age is overcoming her ability to charm her way out of the emotional pain of her life. She and Rupert Friend, who is pitch perfect here as the spoiled enfant terrible who realizes too late how important this older woman is to him, work overtime to deny their true feelings about each other. Their scenes together are as emotionally true as any I've seen in any film. Frears himself provides the ascerbic voiceover, which comments flippantly and precisely on their situation with such dry wit that it takes a while before we realize this isn't a comedy, but a tragedy. The last scene has real power, and the narrator's revelation of what happens when the screen goes dark (a story that took the novelist Colette an entire sequel to tell), hits us with all the force of a bullet in the brain. This movie was very disappointing, especially given its 3-star rating by other members. The script was pedestrian, the performances flat and the American accents jarring. There was zero chemistry between the lovers and Rupert Friend was too effete-seeming to be credible as a desirable partner by either of the women he was involved with. The sets and costumes were fantastic. I would have preferred to watch it with the sound muted! Kathy Bates was the sole bright spot in this dreadful film.I enjoyed this - deb1
I enjoyed watching this movie. I thought the acting and line were very good.
It was a different kind of love story, one that does not have a happy ending.
Kathy Bates and Michelle Pfeiffer were fun to watch. I loved the dialogue between them.
It was fun to watch the glamour time.
The settings and costumes were very glamorous.
I wasn't sure that I would like it but found my self being draw in and needed to know how it was going to end.
