The Thaw
When a renowned environmental advocate, Dr. David Kruipen (Val Kilmer), discovers the carcass of a woolly mammoth in a polar ice cap, he leads a team of four bright ecology students in a research mission at a remote Arctic station. The group uncovers information beyond their wildest dreams...and nightmares when a prehistoric parasite revives and searches for a new warm-blooded host. Now infected, the unsuspecting students are forced to choose between a quarantine that will result in their death or a global epidemic.

The few moments that gave me the heebee geebees did not overcome the predictable storyline of this film. Some of the effects we're quite well done and the acting wasn't half bad. What I found to be most disturbing was what seemed to me to be a subtle, closed lipped endorsement of Eco-terrorism as an acceptable practice. I recommend a pass on this one.I Loved This! - Jeefster
What a great little horror flick! Lower budget, however, it is nicely shot, and even has Val Kilmer in it, which normally means "stinker", but, as his appearance is kept to little more than a few minutes of cameos, it was worth the rent!
The bugs are creepy, the actors do a really convincing job, and the director was able to keep the tension really high. The whole movie was more about personal conflicts and the tensions coming from thoughtful reasoning versus rash foolish decisions while under stress about the spreading and quaranteening of these little devils.
If this was a regular drama-ish movie I would have given it 3 or 4 stars, but for the horror genre I rated it higher. Think "Slither" meets "The Thing" and you've got a pretty good idea of what's what here.
Enjoy! I did.Northern Canada Meets 'The Thing' ... Almost - movienut1
A very tightly done, well acted and high production-valued subtle horror flick that reminded me, from start to finish, of the classic 1982 John Carpenter / Kurt Russell flick 'The Thing'. While the nasty, and quite creepy 'vertebrate' bugs of 'The Thaw' don't quite match the shape shifting, body morphing, tentacle swaying squishiness of the creature(s) in 'The Thing' the 'why did we bring to life' critter of 'The Thaw' is nearly as effective.
While at times a bit thick on the global warming / climate change message that is key to the over-riding arc of the film and did give me pause for thought. What if bugs frozen since 20,000 BC are about to thaw? .... Shudder.
Very much worth the rental. 2 thumbs up.
