The Boys are Back
Growing up can be the adventure of a lifetime.
In the wake of his wife's tragic death, a witty, wisecracking, action-oriented, sportswriter (Clive Owen) finds himself in a sudden stultifying state of single parenthood. With turbulent emotions swirling just below the surface, Joe Warr throws himself into the only child-rearing philosophy he thinks has a shot at bringing joy back into their lives: "just say yes." Raising two boys—a curious six-year-old and a rebel teen from a previous marriage—in a household devoid of feminine influence and with an unabashed lack of rules, life becomes exuberant, instinctual, reckless and on the constant verge of disaster.

I really didn't know where this story was going. It tried to touch too many bases and in the end missed most of them.
It has a happy ending which will probably make up for the muddled story but I found the writer did not make clear what his point was.
I felt film needed more rewriting to slash away the dead wood story. The Boys are Back - djfunkybob
Owen stars as Simon Carr in a true story about a father who must quickly start accepting some responsibility when his wife falls ill and passes away. The film focuses on Carr’s attempt to inject life back into his deflated family by ignoring the structure and circumventing the rules that children need. There are some sad, but important, messages presented about accepting change, dealing with grief, and facing challenges head on. The slower tempo may not appeal to everyone, but those who are patient enough for an honest human interest drama will enjoy. Owen delivers a very good performance and there are a number of strong supporting turns from some unfamiliar Australian actors.Cute, but nothing extraordinary - eebs_barrett
Based on a true story, "The Boys are Back" tells the tale of a family dealing in whatever way they can with the death of its central figure: the mother. Clive Owen plays Joe Warr, a sports journalist who adopts a rather novel parenting strategy: "Just Say Yes". What ensues is a story of a family just struggling to get by, teetering forever on the edge of chaos but somehow managing to pull through. Add to the picture Joe's other son (from a previous marriage) and you have a cute film about the importance of family and the unique ways in which each of us gets by. There are funny scenes of the various exploits that the boys get up to - from cricket in the corridor to dive-bombing into a motel bathtub - but the film provides little more than a repetition of the verdict that "Parenting is hard. Everyone just does what they can."
