Coco avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel)
This movie is in French with English subtitles
Audrey Tautou (The Da Vinci Code, Amelie) shines in this intriguing portrait of the early life of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, the orphan who would build a fashion empire and be known universally by her nickname, Coco. She journeys from a mundane seamstress job to boisterous cabarets to the opulent French countryside, possessing little more than her unwavering determination, unique style and visionary talent. Also starring Benoit Poelvoorde (In His Hands) and Alessandro Nivola (Junebug). Featuring lush settings and stunning costume design, Coco Before Chanel is the gripping and dramatic story of an icon who defied convention and defined the modern woman.

Poor Movie - Disappointing - MariaRamsay
Good story but the movie was not at all well done. (I got more out of reading about Coco Chanel on Wikipedia). The movie lacked flow and the story was disjointed, and not at all believable, as was Tautou's acting depicting the young Coco - too brooding and imparting nothing of the dynamism that Coco intrinsically must have had.
Also, the part with Coco and "Boy" and the car near the end, just before their 2 month holiday, is glaringly trite and predictable, complete with cliché "foreshadowing".Great movie! - lovestorent
I really enjoyed this - the acting, scenery, story, and of course costumes were all very well done. I often find that this sort of movie drags a bit, but this one flew by, I was sorry to see it end! The only downer was that there were only subtitles for the hearing impaired. After a few minutes you get used to it though. . .Coco is facinating - ajohncox
This film shows a long and winding road that Coco traveled to become a clothing designer and later the head of the house of Chanel. She was manipulative and manipulated and in the end she decided to make it on her own and be her own person. She is unashamed and unrelenting in her pursuit of being something more. She suffered some great losses and great success. She will be forever an icon of style. A lovely film.
