The Invention of Lying
In a world where the human race has never evolved the ability to lie, a man who suddenly discovers how will change the world. With this superpower, he can get anything he wants. Well, nearly everything.
Ricky Gervais (Extras, BBC's The Office) displays his hilariously deadpan acting talents in a comedy invention he co-wrote and co-directed. With a star-studded cast including Jennifer Garner, Louis C.K. and Rob Lowe, plus cameos by Tina Fey and Jonah Hill, it's "explosively funny." according to New York critic David Edelstein. Believe it.

Not your typically Hollywood comedy. Ricky Gervais is the main character and I think you either love or hate him. It's his first movie as a director in a fairly big budget movie and likely his last. The casting was odd between Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner to the point of being distracting. She plays a bubble headed character which we aren't used to seeing from her. Lots of great co-stars such as Justin Bateman, Tina Fey and Rob Lowe though. Not bad if you are looking for something different for a change of pace.Breezy, fun - eli_quincy
The Invention of Lying didn't do well at the box office, nor did it receive great reviews from critics. But give it a chance, anyway. Ricky Gervais is winning and while the movie takes a turn for the dramatic about halfway through, the first portion of the movie is truly hilarious -- his fully formed vision of a world in which no lying exists features hilarious line after hilarious line from his talented comedic ensemble. It's a great summer rental.Nice concept in search of a plot - Darrow42
The description of the film is precise. Ricky Gervais plays the only person who can lie.
This leads to some very funny bits at the beginning where everyone tells the truth; jennifer garner confesses exactly what her character was doing just before we meet her was priceless. The adverts for Coke and Pepsi (Pepsi; for when they don't have coke.) were priceless.
There were some funny bits when Gervais starts lieing.
Unfortunately the writers could not carry these funny bits to a whole movie. Instead we got a mediocre Romantic Comedy fused onto this good beginning.
Overall enjoyable, but could have been more.
