The Damned United
From the Academy Award-nominated writer of The Queen and Frost/Nixon, The Damned United is based on the incredible true story of Brian Clough, one of England's greatest soccer managers and his 44 controversial days at the helm of reigning champs Leeds United. Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Twilight Saga: New Moon) triumphs as Clough starring alongside a winning ensemble cast that includes Timothy Spall (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Colm Meaney (Layer Cake) and Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). This inspiring and humorous sports drama is about the power of friendship in the face of adversity and the stubborn will of one man to play by his own rules.

I tend to avoid Sport inpsired films especially centred around Hockey, but it takes 1 man (Michaek Sheen) and REAL Football to rent this.
The Damned United takes an unusual path with this underated uneven Bio-pic. The uncompromising portrayal of controversial coach driven by ambition, ego, inferior complex, and of course his passion for the sport. The High risk coach was unfavored by the Durby Team and community for choosing Peter Taylor (Timothy Spall) as his assistant, a bowling pin shape of a man gifted with insight about players' strengths and a perfect complement to the abrasive Clough.Sheen thrives in the guise of the idiosyncratic Clough in a brilliantly candid, football parable - moviemonger
It’s about the controversial football manager Brian Clough who had a brief time managing the mighty Leeds United team in the early 1970’s when Leeds was on top of the competition. The seeds of Clough’s downfall at Leeds lay in his character. He was arrogant, cocky and he hated the previous manager Don Revie, played by COLM MEANEY. This didn't do him any favours with the team. This is such an enjoyable film, particularly if you watched as much football in the 1970s as I did. But it’s been so cleverly constructed. It’s as much a love story between the two men, Clough and Taylor as it is about pride coming before a fall. Performances are fabulous, MICHAEL SHEEN almost tops his previous outings as Blair and Frost with this and Spall, Meaney and Broadbent are just so solid. It’s funny and insightful into a fascinating character, his rise and his fall.Damned Good! - imran1978
This was a film that I was not too sure of watching based on the premise of football (soccer) management, however I decided to watch it as I am a football fan in general, and a premier league fan n particular (my loyalties lie with Liverpool). This turned out to be a great choice as the film is very well made, with great acting and very good writing. Brian Clough was portrayed immaculatly and gives a good perspective on one of histories greatest football managers.
