The script is just a little too creepy to be a good adaptation of A Christmas Carol, although it does show some exceptional voice acting from Carey and Oldman. The original story is a christmas classic and it sports amazing visuals, but the visuals seem to overwhelm the movie so it can be a bit tiresome and overlong.lovely movie - addictedtomovies
this movie surprised me in that it was almost a cartoon only for adults. The picture quality of the animation was terrific. You can see Jim Carreys expressions in the character and the grittiness in the initial few scences make you forget you are watching a cartoon. I really enjoyed this movie.Visually appealing - cinecynic
I liked the look of this film from the start, as it looked like a story brought to life, with motion and colour and texture (better than life).
The ominous mood of ghosts visiting Scrooge is set up well, with scary sounds and sights, like faces in the doorknob or long shadows. A younger child might find these very unsettling.
There are inconsistencies in the setting that undercut this setup though. Scrooge goes through a screechy main gate and up a long driveway to go home in the beginning, and by the end he can lean out his bedroom window and yell to a boy below on the street.
This storybook look doesn't hold the film together, however. We want to relate to the characters, and in the end, we can't quite do so because their faces are not that real. The voices were good, for the most part, but something is still lost in the animated translation.
I still think the 1951 classic is the best version of this Victorian Christmas tale.
