Chaos Reigns in this Grimm's Fable - filmcmnt
Is it just me, or does anyone else love this new phase that Von Trier is in of making these dark twisted paranormal adult Grimm's fairy tales? This and Melancholia are masterpieces that have a lot in common. They both skewer masculine rational scientific intelligence: in the useless platitudes of the psychologist DeFoe plays here and the amateur astronomer and rationalist that Keiffer Sutherland plays in Melancholia. They both celebrate and revile the dark forces within the natural world and the cosmos and, more problematically, they both suggest that women are more attuned to this organic cosmos of pain. I think the Gainsbourg character here really IS supposed to be a witch and that's certainly problematic for any modern viewer.Deep and Disturbing. - Mano
Clearly this is not for viewers with queasy stomach! I couldn't get tickets for this movie at TIFF. This DVD was a welcome move. One can see this movie and then watch the extras in the DVD to understand the thought process better.
Clearly a movie meant to disturb and make you think. Not just go to the theatre and eat popcorna dn down a litre of soda. In fact eating and drinking that much may have disastrous effects as some of the scenes are nauseating!!
This is essentially a two member acting crew and they are great. Heart wreching performance. Music, cinematography are great too. Director of course must have thought about every scene at great deapth.
I really liked the way the movie talks about Nature being Satan....initially thought ...what???? then it is well clarified...nature within...not the nature outside!! Brilliant , right?
I must admit that I didn't get several metaphors in the movie. Perhaps I lack the knowledge in early Christianity and pagan influence.
If you want to see an avant garde movie, this is a must. If you are not into gross scenes, then avoid this movie! An absolute masterpiece - Poesh
Even if one fails to find the shocking images in Antichrist to their liking, it is difficult to deny that this is a thoughtful, profound and creative tour de force designed for those who are willing to take the leap into the film's eerie universe of darkness, sex and horror.
It's not an easy film to watch, and it certainly isn't a popcorn flick (thinking/active viewers only)...but for those who are willing to brave the storm and let Antichrist sweep over them, you'll be glad you did. One of the most troubling yet rewarding experiences I've had with a movie in the last 5 years. From the brilliant prologue sequence through until the surreal conclusion, the film is consistently stunning on both a visual and intellectual level.
Don't be put off by those who condemn the movie for its explicit sexual content or brutal scenes of gore or mutilation. This is no exploitative affair...the images are thoroughly justified by the film's ideological premise. If someone was expecting a Disney film, they shouldn't have watched something called "Antichrist".
