The Private Lives of Pippa Lee
She lived many lives - except her own.
From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee (Robin Wright Penn) leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher (Alan Arkin) thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staid Connecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test.
In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (Keanu Reeves), Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self.

I really like the story that this film tried to tell - so much so that I want to read the book and figure out the gaps in this story. There is a lot left unsaid, and I assume it is due to the filmmaker's need to edit it down to about 90 min. It was unclear why Pippa's daughter disliked her from the start; in fact, I wasn't even sure at first if they were maybe step-daughter/mother rather than biologically related. A lot of the stories woven together in this film are like this - only partially told.
Still, I liked the story and the performances were terrific! Worth seeing.Terrific ensemble and fine acting - Mano
Robin Wright is the star of this movie. But it doesn't mean others are mediocre. They all pull their weight and shine too. Alan Arkin does his usual powerful portrayal. Keeanu is fine. Julian Moore comes in and stirs things up! Music is gentle and lyrical. Well shot and nicely developed.
Yes, this is a chic flick for sure and you are going to see this film in re runs on W channell for a long tme to come!Character drama about an uninteresting character - napierslogs
"The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" is an independent, character drama, with an all star cast, and written by Rebecca Miller, the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller - so what's not to like? Well, Pippa Lee, for one thing.
I found that they gave us no reason to really like or care for Pippa Lee. And the so called private lives seem to be non-existent. Sure, Pippa was a child, then a teenager, then a young adult, now middle-aged and she will grow old - but I failed to see how this was different from everybody else on the planet.
For character drama enthusiasts you will probably need to see this because I'm sure all the buzz it got piqued your interest like mine, but for everybody else there are plenty of other independent dramas out there with actual characters that will pique your interest.
