Mathieu is a classical pianist undergoing an "existential crisis", according to his estranged wife turned agent, Jeanne. When his mother is hospitalized with cancer, he is left to watch over his younger brother, Paul, who lives for role-playing in historic battle re-enactments. Mathieu decides to join his brother and inadvertently becomes involved in a grave match of honour, discovering that these actors take their role-playing to deadly serious extremes.

The rules of the game - luminol
Character study. Mathieu is a successful concert pianist. If he's at all dissatisfied with his career or his marriage or unhappy---for that matter with anything in his life, he's not expressing it. Vincent Perez plays this character with an air of entitled complacency with just a hint of shimmering vexation. His Mother is heading into the hospital, leaving his younger brother Paul alone. She's worried his brother may be becoming overly obsessed with his hobby; so She asks Mathieu to return home and watch over him while she's away.
His brother is a Cavalry Officer in Napoleon Bonaparte's fifth regiment.
No, he's not soft in the head. He drives a fork lift during the day. He's a Reenactor. (What? ... France has a subculture of Napoleonic War Reenactors?) So Mathieu returns home and accompanies him on a few of these weekend jaunts and quickly discovers the real juice comes from the dynamics of petty jealousies and slights (real and make believe) within their own ranks. These contretemps are also part of the game and have to be played out as prescribed within the rigid military code of honor.
Although some of participants take their characters very seriously. There is a total disconnect between the game and real life. This is a Cardinal rule. However, when some of these weekend warriors transgress this established rule and threaten Mathieu in his personal life. The two brothers quickly close ranks, and put on their game faces.
