Wonderful World
Ben Singer (Matthew Broderick) is a failed children's folksinger, a career proofreader, a less-than-extraordinary weekend dad, and perhaps the most negative man alive. Floundering in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comfort comes from regular chess games and friendly debates with his Senegalese roommate Ibou (Michael Kenneth Williams). When Ibou is struck ill, his sister Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) stays for an extended visit. Her influence helps Ben realize that cynicism may be all a matter of perspective.

An intriguing film that gets better as it goes along. I say this because I did find Matthew Broderick’s performance overly cynical at the beginning.
It’s an original story of redemption. Matthew Broderick has always been good at giving a low key performance, but this turns out to be strong performance as well. This is an acting and talking film – don’t view this for high-powered action scenes or flamboyant hysterical arguments.
This is an earthy film that breaks down barriers – whether they be cultural or spiritual. But it is all done in a quiet way. The script is superior and the message is nicely presented with an ending that is balanced and very acceptable. Not sure.... - Dakos
how or why Matthew Broderick is typecast for these types of roles but seeing this movie reminds me of other characters he has done recently (Diminished Capacity, Then She Found Me, Finding Amanda). Yet again he plays a character that has a pessimistic view of his part in the world and meanders through his life as he sees fit. Even his daughter from a broken marriage does not want to be part of his misery. For me, it's time for Mr. Broderick to remake his image and get out of making films like this that really offer no insight to the human imagination other than misery.
