Helen
Helen (Ashley Judd) is beautiful, intelligent and seems to have it all. Happily married to David (Goran Visnjic), she enjoys a loving relationship with her teenage daughter (Alexia Fast) from a previous marriage, and teaches at the local university. Yet Helen is hiding a secret which gradually penetrates the very fabric of her well-being. David loves and supports her unconditionally, but at times she becomes inaccessible and withdrawn. When she meets Mathilda (Lauren Lee Smith), Helen understands they share a common bond and - courageously struggling out of her own quagmire - she tries desperately to help her. Helen takes us on a journey without easy departures. It is a portrait of a marriage and a story of friendship - of courage, devotion, and the triumph of love.

I wanted to see this movie only because it starred Ashley Judd ... and she certainly does not disappoint as far as her acting ability goes and her success at pulling off the character with her usual finesse. But the movie was very dark and unforgiving - it was difficult to sit through once and I would not watch a second time ... even to see the outstanding performance of Ms. Judd.Intense Drama - 0930tracey
Ashley Judd is phenomenal in this very poignant film about depression. Silently suffering, Helen slips further and further away from her husband and daughter and retreats into her own dark place. Her only comfort is a young woman who seemingly understands what she is going through. I definately recommend this movie.Helen - moviemaven1
This is a courageous depiction of the stuggles of those who suffer from various forms of depression and insanity. Although slow moving, it takes the viewer into their desparate world. Ashley Judd plays Helen with poignancy and strong emotion. I think her talent is sadly under-rated. Her ability deserves much more attention from Actors' Guilds and Associations. This particular role launches her high above the role Sandra Bullock played in the "Blindside" and I find myself wondering why the Screen Actors' Guild awarded an oscar to Bullock when this movie was made in the same year. How much lower can they put the bar for this award. Granted, Helen is not a "feel good" movie, but somewhere in the movie, I felt that it must have been based on a true story given the realistic depiction of her desperation.
