The Runaways
Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in the music-fueled coming of age story of the groundbreaking, all-girl rock band, The Runaways. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon, Pearl Harbor), who turns the rebellious Southern California kids into a rock group with outrageous success. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself and so do its two leads: Joan is the band's pure rock n' roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.

The Runaways are punk-rock legends from being the first successful all female rock group to hitting the charts with #1 singles... yet this movie fools you. The half decent and unstable picth perfect bio-pic leaves you guessing and at times confused at the direction.
For me its a HUGE disapointment, I grew up rocking out to Joan Jett and sometimes fantasing at what it would like to meet her 1 day. My hopes was to get a better scale on the woman behind the rock anthems and stark noir hair. Instead Kristen Stewart portrayal was offbeat, and awkward to say the least. Like the band the movie became about Sherie Currie and her struggles with substance abuse plus additional family woes.
It wasn't until the last 30 minutes of the film do you see Jett overcoming her sense of lost in the world of homophobes and impending career troubles that you see the refreshsed, enlightened and successful woman we know as Joan Jett now. I'd perferred if they skipped the first 2 hours and change the movie to "Crimson & Clover: The story of Joan Jett". It rings smoother and would have grabbed a larger demographic of fans who'd walk out of the theatre Happy! Not demanding a refund on their tickets.a bit disappointing - Kevininspace
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. I like both of these young actors and thought I couldn't loose. It was just boring. Typical and predictable. I don't want to give anything away in case you do decide to give it a go. The only highlight was in the special features when you get to see the real life ladies. The Runaways - djfunkybob
Fans of the late 70s punk rock movement, and the 80’s rock derived thereafter, should enjoy this biopic about the unfulfilled career of The Runaways. Although fans of Jett, specifically, maybe disappointed that the movie is predominantly about The Runaways lead singer, Cherie. The film plays in two acts with the formation of the band being far more interesting than its dissolution. I enjoyed the story of Jett’s desire to act on her passion for music regardless of her limited means and how Cherie had been ignored too long by her family despite having a voice that needed to be heard. The final half of the movie focuses on Cherie's difficulty dealing with fame, drugs and putting the band ahead of her individual ambition. Unfortunately, Cherie’s story is so common that the film wasn't able to separate itself from its peers like The Doors, Almost Famous and Sid & Nancy.
