Why so popular? I know. - KevinJaques
This movie was super popular. You always hope that's because it was so insanely great to some people so they drag everybody else. This was not that. Instead, this movie was designed to mildly please everybody. It mildly pleased me.
Actually, it was a bit creative. There is an old tension. If you explore issues of maturity with kids, you get inferior acting and problems connecting to the bulk of your audience, who are not kids. If you do it with adults, they seem shallow and immature. In this movie, adult actors were thrown into their teen situation through a weird time travel where they continued to appear to be adults to each other (and us). Very clever.
The plot made little sense. However, Craig Robinson was permitted to mug directly at the camera as he exclaimed, “It’s a Hot Tub Time Machine”. He did it just right, turning it from annoyingly stupid, into just more humour.
There’s a scantily clad hot young woman and there are bare breasts of other women.
There is plenty of puke. Why is that such a fad? Yes, it’s shocking. Because it’s gross! Nobody wants to see it. Who finds it funny?
There is plenty of slapstick and occasional wit.
I predict you'll be mildly pleased.Silly time traveling - thenewguy
Hot Tub Time Machine is what I think you'd get if you took Back to the Future, advanced the calendar 25 years and took out the serious parts. The film follows three friends and a nephew of one of the friends who accidentally travel from 2010 back to 1986. The men appear as they did at that time, allowing them to blend in with the rest of the population. Once there they get to relive a wild weekend which shaped the course of their lives and the friends must make choices between trying to maintain the past as it was or breaking away to try a new course.
The film doesn't take itself seriously, its humour is a bit like American Pie -- slap stick, silly, sexual.
Though it's silly and predictable, the movie has some good moments, good moments which, if they had been polished a bit, could have made it a strong movie. As it is, there is nothing special about Hot Tub Time Machine, but I enjoyed it because it doesn't pretend otherwise. Not so funny - Northerner2
I tried to watch the movie but couldn't finish it ... and that was the theatrical version! I rented it because John Cusack is in it thinking it would have some good aspects to it but it didn't. It is just a lot of swearing and negative aspects of what guys do.
