The Countess
Based on the true story of Erzsébet Báthory
The Countess chronicles the infamous Hungarian noble's tragic fall from grace - and subsequent decent into madness. When her blossoming romance with the dashing István (Daniel Brühl) is sabotaged by the young nobleman's father, Thurzo (William Hurt), Countess Báthory is left heartbroken and confounded. Convinced that her fading beauty is to blame, she begins to practice a ritual that she believes holds key to eternal youth: bathing in the blood of young virgins.

A missed opportunity - Madamx28
This movie could have been great. It could have been full of interesting facts and depictions of events that could have captivated the viewer. But instead the writers seemed to have crammed years worth of events into a short 90+ minutes of movie. It was a sad disappointment and as another reviewer put it, it seemed like they couldn't decide if the title character was a victim of circumstance or truly an evil person.
It's too bad as this movie could have been very very good.Assault on Bathory? - McGuffin
As a voice-over says "History is written by the winners", and this disappointing biopic of the infamous 16th century Hungarian noblewoman Elizabeth Bathory can't seem to make its mind up whether she is really the mass murderess who bathed in the blood of young girls (as the legend goes) or the victim of the classic misogyny of powerful men threatened by an intelligent, educated, strong, rich independent woman. What could have been an enthralling historical drama with interesting characters set in an exciting locale and period is ruined by an inept and boring script, stilted dialogue, poor acting, and dodgy accents. Even the usually reliable William Hurt (miscast as a scheming nobleman) and Julie Delpy (oddly passive in the title role) are below standard. Over-all a sad waste of opportunity.
