After reading a few of the other reviews for this movie, I had to add my own. Those people obviously didn't get the movie. This is a very intense movie, affected me more than I thought it would. It's sad. At first it's a bit comical how the main character is kinda going nuts from the medication he's helping to test out. But then it's not so funny anymore, as you see how bad it is getting and how much it's ruining him. It made me see things from the point of view of alot of street people that I am sure ended up there because of mental or drug problems. It really lets you see how things spiral out of control and they can't do anything about it. Very good movie. Bravo to the writers/directors and to Michael Rapaport for a very well done movie.i didn't likem it - FRISCOSAURAS
Special is normally not recommended to watch during pregnancy or nursing, as the effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown, but certainly as detrimental to the fetus as it is to the adult who chooses to subject the poor little thing to it. Nowadays, it seems that superhero movies are bound to be big-budgeted money-making projects featuring overused actors and pretentious directors oblivious of the utter silliness of the material they are working with.
This is where movies such as Special, a low-budgeted independant film featuring lesser-known actors, come in. Despite not looking like much, this black comedy offers an entertaining new take on the superhero genre: what if a superhero was nothing more than a fantasy coming from the mind of a lonely man under medication?
Special may look like a black comedy, even though you probably won't laugh a lot while watching it. I suppose a few actually clever jokes are better than a constant flow of lame jokes (see Iron Man). The movie also has a few pacing issues, especially in the first half, and some plot oddities, but things get better as the movie goes and end with a genuinely powerful and poignant finale, mostly thanks to Michael Rapaport's outstanding performance.
Overall, a minor but interesting film, totally worth a rental.
