Special Edition
The Future is History
In this science fiction masterpiece, Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to save the human race from a deadly virus that has forced mankind into dank underground communities in the future. Along his travels, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) and a mental patient, brilliantly portrayed by Brad Pitt, who may hold the key the mysterious rogue group, The Army of the 12 Monkeys, thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease. Believing he can obtain a pure virus sample in order to find a cure in the future, he is met with one riddle after another that puts him in a race for time.

Well, I must say I saw this for the first time about 8-10 years ago and walked out of the theatre going "what the hell was THAT all about" I forgot it comes from the mind of Terry Gilliam; one of my comedy mentors from the Monty Python gang. I absolutely love his illustrations; make me look sideways at the world a lot more. This is a movie that made me think oh, that makes sense and then Gilliam throws a curve ball; sets me back on my thought heels. Brad Pitt is crazy scary; wouldn't want to meet him in a back alley somewhere. Bruce Willis is excellent as a man dazed and confused. Madeleine Stowe is someone you are not sure of; she never really shows her true colors and you don't know if she can be trusted or not. The bug in the vial plays a key element in the movie and upsets the balance of power in the down below world that remaining humans live in. When you meet Brad Pitt's character in the asylum and then Bruce returns to down below, it is like a safer place to be, that is a saner world than above. I have to watch it again in the future; it still puzzles me to this day. I would recommend you watch Brazil first if you are not familiar with Terry Gilliam. I have watched that movie 3 times and it finally makes some sense to me. Good movie.Thinking Person's Sci-Fi - altoblues
This is a thinking person's sci-fi thriller. Dark and fairly creepy (thank you Terry Gilliam), 12 Monkeys requires that you pay attention to the action on-screen, and also that you spend sometime thinking about what you're seeing. Fans of Blade Runner and Battlestar Galactica (2003) will probably like this one too. Great performances all around.12 monkeys - basilbenz
The big problem is where to begin as this movie needs your attention the forthcoming two hours and you better not miss some minutes for getting a coke as there is a danger you can't follow. But good there is also a pause-button. Bruce Willis must travel into a timemachine to find out some antivirus for a virus that made animals rule over the world in 1996. Thanks to some mistakes he first ends up in 1990, then in the First World War and how messed up it all might look like, Terry Gilliam comes up with what must be one of the most intelligent scripts ever. This ex-Monty Phyton man knows exactly how genius SF-stories has to be told like and his choice of cast couldn't have been any better, there is the lunatic Brad Pitt (his performance in the asylum is memorable) and a superb Bruce Willis who proves he is more than some Schwarzenegger-wanna be. It's a movie you can watch over and over again as the script is so weird and complicated (and yet you can follow) that every view gives you other surprises. One of my big favourites.
