Fantastic foreign film - Isis59
Viggo Morgensen is outstanding in this foreign film and speaks Spanish. It is a film with English sub-titles and a compelling true story of a soldier for the Spanish government. A loyal, powerful, independent man who loves only one woman but never marries her. It has all the interesting twists of a real life story...sadness, love, tragedy and inspiration. Great film.Okay - thaicat
I picked up this film mainly because I like period pieces. I had no idea that it was based on a series of books. So, I don't have an opinion with regard to whether the film stayed true to the books. The costumes and settings were great and it was an okay story. It ran a bit too long for my liking. I had know I did that Viggo Mortensen was fluent in Spanish. Who knew? Overall, an okay film.a disappointment - story1
Being a fan of both Perez-Reverte, the author of the Alatriste series, and Spanish culture and history in general, I was quite underwhelmed by this treatment. The look of the film was excellent - darkened street scenes, the mud and blood of battle - but a decision was made to put five books into the space of a couple of hours. A big mistake as for even someone who has read the books, I found the plot difficult to follow. Characters are introduced without sufficient background and then dispensed with. There is no flow to the film. Its too bad that the script did not concentrate on one of the books and do it justice. The result will be that, with little success commercially, there will be no further attempt to put Perez-Reverte fine character on film.
