Happy Tears
There's an art to going home without going crazy.
California-based sisters Jayne (Parker Posey) and Laura (Demi Moore) have traveled down very different paths in their adult lives. Jayne, a ditsy, self-centered shopaholic, married the wealthy son of a famous artist. Laura, a pragmatic environmental research biologist, ended up with a handful of children. When their father`s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Jayne and Laura head back home to deal with the situation, leading to a chaotic family reunion brimming with laughter and tears.

"Happy Tears" is an independent, fairly simple, dysfunctional family drama. Two grown sisters move back home to take care of their ailing father. The sisters of course have their own problems on top of dealing with their father who is in denial of his situation and very much trying to live as the patriarch of dysfunctionality.
Many movies have told this type of story, and these filmmakers attempted to make their mark and do something better or at least different. But I was turned off by it. They were going for a dream-like feel with dream-like colours and imagery and of course actual dreams mixed in. I found it all very weird and made it hard for me to get into the film.
The title relates to the laughs and tears that occur. The problem is there are no laughs, and although the characters were well written I wasn't drawn into them so I didn't feel what they were feeling - just uncomfortable.
I appreciated the actors they cast, and the effort that they made to make this film new and good, but I have to recommend "The Savages" (2007) over this.Horrible...with some good moments - xsnrg
Overall this movie was NOT very good at all. The story was kind of weird, and although the acting was fairly good, I just couldn't get into it and FORCED myself to watch the entire thing. I would not recommend this movie to anyone...I would rather watch the stock channel.A complete mess... - DoubleDownAgain
To be fair, I didn't finish watching the film after only making it halfway through. I very very rarely turn a film off but I couldn't take anymore. I'm also usually a big Parker Posey fan but she was awful in this, probably because of the horrible screenplay and the awful direction. The movie is about two sisters who have to go home to take care of their father who has dementia, and yes, there is a scene where he craps himself and they have to clean him up. The screenwriter/director throws in a mix of absurd dream elements which ring hollow and false. Stay far far away from this one.
