The one thing the film has going for it are the visual effects. Everything else is, in the best case scenario, mediocre. The story was not very well written and the screenplay was messy. Dialogues were ok, nothing out of the extraordinary - just a typical Disney film type of screenplay. Visually, though, there were some impressive effects, and the film was very nice to the eye. That being said, the acting was quite bad, especially disappointing from Nicholas Cage. The lead actor/kid was rather bland and annoying, and Monica Bellucci's role was a cameo, to say the least. It is NOT a good film, but it will keep you entertained for the two hours it's long, for which the visual effects are the main contributor, I'd say. Worth watching if you have no expectations.…Not that bad - PeterParker
I liked what I saw in the trailer and the movie turned out to be about what I expected. Some of the special effects were good and there were a few funny lines and physical gags. The story, once set, run its course as expected.
There is a hidden bit after the credits leaving a sequel as an option.I Liked it. - sampid
The action scenes are a real breath of fresh air- FINALLY a movie where the action scenes are comprehensible! Obviously it's a family movie so Turteltaub wouldn't choose the popular shaky-camera quick edit style. The action is really fun! There's tonnes of it and the special effects are a good bonus too. There's tonnes of humor in the film, and it was NOT just what you see in the trailer that was funny. There's one particularly hilarious scene in the middle which I won't spoil since it's too funny!
Overall, while not a masterpiece, The Sorcerer's Apprentice was a fun time at the cinema, and a good film for the family, even if it leans towards a tad frightening in some parts. That said, I'd recommend it for sure and it'll make for a good brainless summer action flick for the whole family.
