Good
Viggo Mortensen stars in an extraordinary change-of-pace role as he plays John Halder, a good, decent individual with family problems. A German literature professor in the 1930s, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Yet with Halder’s change in fortune, his seemingly inconsequential decisions potentially jeopardize the people in his life with devastating effects.

I can see why people wouldn't--it's very low key, and slow, but I liked the atmosphere, and I really like the moral dilemma that it posed. What would we do if we were in the same position as the main character? Would you say "no, drop dead" to the Nazis? It's not black and white, and that's what makes it interesting. Not first rate, but worth watchingbad screenplay - fruibal
1) British actors with Anglo names performing German characters, indeed it looks awkward to me.
2) Maurice, "the Jude psychoanalysts, gets in conflict himself upon making any exclamation during the movie : calls the name of Jesus repeatedly
3) Took two hours for John the main character that the Jewish extermination was for real along with the song he hears. Not very "good." - a2them
I'll be honest, I never actually finished the film so it may have picked up steam and been a real smash.
However, the first half of the movie (which I did see), was really dry and moved at a snails pace.
It was interesting to see the German Nazi experience from a different perspective, however it lacked the heart that most wwII movies have.
