Get Low
A True Tall Tale
Academy Award winner Robert Duvall (1984, Best Actor, Tender Mercies) is Felix Bush, the "Hermit of Caleb County," a man so haunted by his secrets that he has lived in quiet desolation in the Tennessee backwoods for over 40 years. Realizing that he is near his own mortality, Bush decides to have a "living funeral party," inviting people to tell their stories about him. Enlisting the help of Frank Quinn (Golden Globe winner Bill Murray, 2004, Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Lost In Translation) and Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black, Legion), Bush goes through a process of self-discovery, allowing him to deal with his past secrets, including ones involving old flame (and new widow) Mattie (Academy Award winner Sissy Spacek, 1980, Best Actress, Coal Miner's Daughter).

Some very powerful performances and the director does a great job of leading up to and building up to the ending for the big "funeral" but then...well in my opinion the reveal lacked punch. Partly because the teases throughout the movie gave a lot of it away and also because the big huge "secret" that caused Felix to become a hermit was pretty mild. I was expecting a big emotional moment but I didn't feel anything at all. It's still a nice story with some interesting characters but since the whole movie slowly builds into that reveal the writers needed to have a better ending/mystery than the one they came up with. One question I had - what happened to all the lottery money in the end?Interesting, but overhyped - easyHwolf
This movie has an interesting concept in regards to having a funeral before one dies.
It contains some suspense, but that's about all the movie has for itself. The quirkiness of the main character is fun for a bit, then you're left feeling that the movie should hurry up.
It's okay, but not worth writing home about, except very briefly.Duvall, Murray & Spacek lend their mega-watt talents to this undemanding movie. Beautifully shot. - moviemonger
It’s really hard to explain just how good Duvall is in this, Robert Duvall’s best performance since THE APOSTLE. Duvall has an energy here he hasn’t shown in years. It’s a thunderous performance, and one tinged with regret and sadness, which only an actor of Duvall’s age and experience can bring to such a role. Supporting Duvall is an actor with a similarly legendary pedigree; Bill Murray. From my synopsis, you might assume that Murray’s the comic relief, but, while he has a few funny lines, he also has a strong dramatic arc of his own, revolving around his timid romance with Spacek’s character. First time director Aaron Schneider does a great job with GET LOW, approaching it in a straightforward, but strongly effective manner, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood’s work as a director. He style is that he almost doesn’t have a style, and he never tries to infuse the film with any fancy camera tricks, filters, avid farts, etc., GET LOW is a very entertaining character study and it’s a very elegant, moving film.
