Easy A
In this charming, critically acclaimed tale of rumors and reputation, Olive (Emma Stone), an average high school student, sees her below-the-radar existence turn around overnight once she decides to use the school's gossip grapevine to advance her social standing. Now her classmates (Amanda Bynes, Aly Michalka) are turning against her and the school board is becoming concerned, including her favorite teacher (Thomas Haden Church) and the distracted guidance counselor (Lisa Kudrow). With the support of her hilariously idiosyncratic parents (Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson) and a little help from a long-time crush (Penn Badgley), Olive attempts to take on her notorious new identity and crush the rumor mill once and for all.

This movie does have an irksome predictability about it, leading to a disappointing finale of pursuit similar to a thousand other movies. This film hasn’t developed the desired ability to massage the ideal amount of complication out of the screenplay, and while passably engaging and even semi-poignant, it just doesn’t contain the urgency to sufficiently rouse the senses.Easy A - djfunkybob
4.5 This double-homage to Hawthorne's classic The Scarlet Letter and to Hughes’ impressionable 80’s high school teen dramas flows effortlessly with a certain rhythm thanks to a well-crafted script. At the centre of it all is the branded Olive (played by Stone) with the ideal amount of beauty, strength and self-deprecation. Stone should have been given consideration for an Oscar nomination simply for captivating you from beginning to end. Olive’s character resonated with me because I recognized the average high school student in her. The film reminded me of Clueless mostly because of its superb adaptation of classic literature into a more relatable high school setting. The only part I didn't care for was the subplot with Kudrow’s unusually despondent guidance counselor.A+ for Easy A - bry1926
Easy A is one of the best high school teen comedies to come along in a while, joining the ranks of Clueless, Mean Girls, and the best of John Hughes. What is the key to the success of Easy A? A super smart script, inspired casting (e.g. Stanley Tucci and Thomas Hayden Church), and one Emma Stone. Hollywood's new It Girl simply carries this film, and her Olive Pendergast comes across as witty, charming, intelligent, and sympathetic. One of the funniest performances of the year! The plot involves Olive manipulating the school's out of control rumour mill to both advance her social standing, and to help out some less fortunate classmates, with a clever nod to Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter. Even if you've been turned off by dime-a-dozen lame teen comedies (American Pie 8, anyone?), catch this one. Easy A gets an A+.
