The Extra Man
The Extra Man follows Louis Ives (Paul Dano), a lonely dreamer who fancies himself the hero of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. When a deeply embarrassing incident forces him to leave his job at an exclusive Princeton prep school, Louis heads to New York City to make a fresh start. He quickly finds a 9 to 5 job at an environmental magazine, where he encounters an entrancing, green obsessed co-worker Mary (Katie Holmes).
But, what really sparks Louis' imagination is his new home life. He rents a room in the ramshackle apartment of Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline), a penniless, wildly eccentric and brilliant playwright. When Henry's not dancing alone to obscure music or singing operettas, he's performing with great panache the duties of an "extra man," a social escort for the wealthy widows of Manhattan high society. The two men develop a volatile mentorship, which leads to a series of urban adventures encountering everything from a leaping lion to a wildly jealous hirsute neighbor to drunken nonagenarians to a shady Swiss hunchback.
Along his exploration into the heart of New York City, Henry and Louis have unexpected influences on each other and form a memorable bond that bridges their differences.

somewhat amusing - waste of talented actors - lookingjust
This should be a twistedly funny film. It has Kevin Kline, John C Reilly, Paul Dano - all proven and excellent comedic actors!! Oh - it has Katie Holmes too, her usual blank-looked cult zombie self, playing cute, but she is not the main problem. The main problem is the script just doesn't work - it tries for comic absurd, but really is just absurd. It seems to want to be something like a 1950's/60's farce, but set in the present (2010). This just doesn't really work, despite the hamming it up big time by Kline. All in all, it was ok for a rental; I didn't not finish it or anything, but it seemed to promise so much more (probably what Katie Holmes thinks all the time about Tom Cruise, but that's another matter).Fun and over the top - Canada123
The movie is campy and the main players very over the top - kind presented like a play more than a movie. A lot goes on but it has a charm all its own. Very poor excentric campy cast members make the most out of their lives kind of thing in New York - but it retains a patina of believebilityKline is great fun throughout. The film scrambles to keep up with him. - moviemonger
Kevin Kline tends to give bravura performances even when he’s not playing bravura characters. In “The Extra Man,” he might as well be playing a variation on Jon Lovitz’s Master Thespian from “Saturday Night Live.” He’s terrifically entertaining without being altogether believable. The movie is anchored — or at least tethered, briefly — by Kevin Kline, who gives a typical Kline performance, both coolly thought through and emotionally inhabited.
A callow young would-be writer (Paul Dano) comes to New York City to discover himself and rooms in a shabby apartment with a temperamental elder escort (Kevin Kline). It's all very whimsical -- aggressively so. The actors are swell, but it's all just an excuse to show off its characters' one-note quirkiness. Occasionally funny, and the actors are fun, but it also gets wearing after a while. Two and a half stars
