I liked this movie. This is a movie with 2 stories. The obvious one is Secretariat's; a fantastic race horse. He accomplished a lot with the help of all the humans in his life (owner, trainer, jockey, groom). I wished the second story got more attention - Penny, Secretariat's owner had to fight the old boys network in order for her to do what she did. This should have had more attention in the movie.THE Horse - MikeB
I confess I have a soft spot for movies about horses and “Secretariat” was no exception in that I enjoyed it immensely. Sure its’ got the clichés of the horses lining up in the ramp for the big race and the trash talk between owners, trainers and jockeys but it all is so well done with some fine performances, particularly from John Malkovich playing the ecletic Lucien Laurin, the trainer of Secretariat.
The movie is an accurate rendition of Penny Chenery (played by Diane lane), the owner of the famous horse, and how she overcomes the death of her parents and the adversity of her siblings and husband on the quest to make her horse legendary. She must also deal, as a woman, with the constant male prejudice found in the sporting world. But aside from this, it is a different story, because right from the start Secretariat was slated for greatness. In a sense it is a story of perfection – the perfect running machine. The times Secretariat made for each of his wins in the Triple Crown have yet to be broken. As we see in the last race at Belmont there were only five horses, many owners simply dropped out, seeing it as futile to run against Secretariat. The movie succeeds well in transmitting to us the sense of awe of this magnificent horse.
Incidentally there is significant Canadian content in the raising of this celebrated horse: the trainer, Lucien Laurin, was from Quebec and the jockey, Ron Turcotte, was from New Brunswick.
