You Don't Know Jack
The Life and Deaths of Jack Kevorkian
Is this the face of a killer?
Angel of mercy... or murderous "Doctor Death"? Jack Kervorkian is one of the most polarizing figures in modern American history, a man whose passionate belief that people have the right to die has brought him both praise and vilification. Oscar- and Emmy-winning actor Al Pacino brings "Dr. Death" to life in an all-new HBO Films presentation: You Don’t Know Jack, directed by Oscar-winner Barry Levinson.

Interesting, but in this movie, the man overshadows the issues, and, well, Kevorkian doesn't. He's not particularly likeable, so why even make such a movie? The time and money would have been much better used toward a really good exploration of the right to die movement. It's an important right and the struggle for it is not likely to go away, what with the boomers aging en masse.Insightful - gingericecream
I had the honor of watching this DVD on the weekend that Dr. Kevorkian died (aged 83). I hope his death was peaceful and pleasent. I ordered the DVD because he was a hero of mine, but I still learnt alot by watching it. I think those that take on society's paradigms have to be wired differently from the rest of us, and this film paints Jack Kevorkian as a strong willed, fact based, and intelligent. What interesting circumstances that helped him with his goal to provide help to people and dialouge about a very difficult subject. I had expectedc the film to be a dry documentary with lots of interviews, I was very surprised at how watchable it was.I Didn't Know Jack - newdaysof
I must admit that before seeing this movie, I had a wrong impression about Jack Kevorkian. But now I know that he is simply trying to relieve the terrible suffering of terminally ill patients in a humane and compassionate way. It turns out, the government is inhumane and incompassionate by refusing to assist terminally ill patients relieve their suffering.
Al Pacino is a great actor and was perfect in this role. Susan Sarandon and the rest of the cast also do a fine job. I thought this movie would be depressing to watch, but it really wasn't. It turns out Jack has a good sense of humour and is a very intelligent and caring man.
We will all need to face our own death one day whether we like it or not, and except in the case of an accident, we will need to decide when and how we will die: will we hang on to the bitter end stuck in a hospital bed, enduring the humiliation of tubes stuck in us, having orderlies changing our diapers, endless pain and suffering? Or do we want to be courageous and decide to take our own life in a caring and controlled way that minimizes our suffering? Those are the types of questions that this film deals with. This film is a must-see since everyone is going to have to deal with our own mortality at some point or possibly the suffering of a loved one.
