For Colored Girls
Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, and Whoopi Goldberg head up an all-star cast in a vibrant world where friends and strangers dream, fear, cry, love, and laugh out loud in an attempt to find their true selves. Adapted by writer/director Tyler Perry from Ntozake Shange's acclaimed choreopoem, this gripping film paints an unforgettable portrait of what it means to be a woman of color in the modern world.

It has been a long time since I've been moved by a movie. I've been entertained, excited, amused and satiated but after watching this, I was moved to my core. I cannot stop thinking about Tyler Perry's film adaptation For Colored Girls. The movie is rooted in Ntozake Shange's choreopoem (yes, I had to look that up.) Shange wrote the piece in 1975 For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. The representation of women's stories in this movie is haunting, genuine, heart breaking and uplifting. I can't even begin to describe all the things that this movie is. I wish it was called For Every Girl. Race plays a huge part in the movie but at the end of it, I intensely felt my social location as woman. This is a film for every single woman out there.
The most impactful moment in the movie for me (and this movie is filled to the brim with them) was the poem recited by the character Joanna (Jo)/The Lady in Red She was portrayed by Janet Jackson. Joanna is materially successful, hard, unaccessible and superior minded. There is a masculine air about Joanna which you see in her fashion, some of her mannerisms and some what in the way she relates to other women. Joanna discovers her second husband is gay. In sleeping with other men outside of their marriage he's given her HIV. The poem she recites as part of this conversation was powerful. Watch for yourself and you will see what I mean.wonderful - claire1984
I haven't actually seen this whole movie yet, because it's never available on this site geez. But i have heard absolutely incredible things about it! It depicts women and abuse so vidily. It is an intense movie, not meant for everyone. You need to be kinda tough to be able to watch it and get through it. there will be tears!Should have stayed on stage - BohemiasAngel
I was very excited to see this ensemble cast in a Tyler Perry movie. I was interested into seeing how something crafted for the stage was going to transfer to screen, and what the vision was in order to tackle such an important subject matter. Unfortunately I found that conventions that worked for stage didn't transfer to film, dragged pacing and these monologue moments really stuck out. Instead of feeling for these women, I couldn't wait for the final credits to roll. Some performances stuck out, but it was based on the actor's strength in working with the material, rather then the direction being unified. Not worth the 2+ hours, which was really disappointing.
