Monte Walsh
A Real Western
Monte Walsh is an aging cowboy facing the ending days of the Wild West era. As barbed wire and railways steadily eliminate the need for the cowboy, Monte and his friends are left with fewer and fewer options. New work opportunities are available to them, but the freedom of the open prairie is what they long for. Eventually, they all must say goodbye to the lives they knew, and try to make a new start.

One Cliche After Another - newdaysof
Lee Marvin and Jack Palance are great as hard-bitten cowboys trying to earn a living, but the whole movie is just one cliche after another.
There's the "cowboy gettin' too old to be a cowboy and wants to settle down" cliche. There's the "hooker in the saloon love-interest" cliche. There's the "guys playing poker in the saloon who get into a big brawl" cliche. There's the "cowboy who tries to tame the wild horse" cliche. You get the idea. There's many more. There's very little original material in this movie.
The other thing that bothered me was in a couple of the scenes, there is a horse stampede and at least two horses get badly trampled by the other horses - it was real - not part of the script. Very sad to think that those horses probably got seriously injured and probably died. There is another scene where a cowboy gets bucked by a horse and is trampled and kicked in the head. The stunt rider was probably badly injured.
The only thing that makes this movie worthwhile is the very authentic look and feel to everything - it is all very believable.
