Welcome to the Rileys
Welcome to the Rileys is a powerful drama about finding hope in the most unusual of places. Once a happily married and loving couple, Doug and Lois Riley (James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo) have grown apart since losing their teenage daughter eight years prior. Leaving his agoraphobic wife behind to go on a business trip to New Orleans, Doug meets a 17-year-old runaway (Kristen Stewart) and the two form a platonic bond. For Lois and Doug, what initially appears to be the final straw that will derail their relationship, turns out to be the inspiration they need to renew their marriage.

This movie has some fine performances and a worthwhile story. Its basically a collision of two worlds. A long-married couple (edging on 30 years) has been going through a crisis in their relationship, part of which was caused by the death of their daughter several years before. We find this out at the beginning of the movie, where we are somewhat mislead to believe that we are in for a long and troubled relationship type film - equating a morbid and depressing cinematic experience.
After this “introduction” the husband leaves for a business conference in New Orleans and the story shifts gears. In New Orleans he encounters a street-wise prostitute and befriends her – all this as a substitute for his deceased daughter. The interactions between the two (and eventually, three people, when the wife shows up) are engaging and certainly do not gloss over the lifestyle of the young hooker. It’s all quite credible and with good juxtaposition between a middle-class lifestyle and the life of an “exotic dancer”.
This is definitely no “Hollywood Pretty Woman”. It would have been easy to have a Happy Ending scenario, but the conclusion avoids that.Superb Acting! Fantastic Script! - 0930tracey
Really, what more could I ask for? All 3 lead actors truly put their heart and soul into this film and it is really obvious.
Kristen Stewart is phenomenal in a role that was quite tongue-in-cheek. (far from Bella Swan)
As always, James Gandolfini was perfect. He could do no wrong in my book.
Do yourself a favour and Zip this.Great Story - lorbar
I really enjoyed this movie. The theme was a big surprise that I wasn't expecting. The acting is great. It shows that it is hard to change your life once you are past a certain age. The young girl in the story is pitiful, but I think James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo were superb. James Gandolfini plays a very compassionate person who is trying to help a young girl to compensate for his daughter's death. It bring him and his very much closer. A great movie indeed.
