Jack Goes Boating
Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) in his directorial debut, and Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) star as Jack and Connie, two single people who, on their own, might fade into the anonymous background of New York City, but in each other begin to find the courage and desire to pursue a budding relationship. As Jack and Connie cautiously circle commitment, the couple that introduced them, Clyde (John Ortiz, American Gangster) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega, Broadway’s Rent), come face to face with uncertainties in their own commitment.

3,5 stars A very nice character piece - lookingjust
This is an artsy movie - not a lot of action (as in violence) or sex, nothing much happens. Just a nice sweet film about real life and the ups and downs, very well acted by all. Amy Ryan is superb, but so are all the others really. Highly recommended if you like these kind of character-rich stories.a piece of life - snickerdoodle
A beautiful little movie that shows a beautiful little totally realistic and painfully imperfect slice of real life as it goes: regular imperfect and insecure people going about living their regular and very imperfect lives, only daring to dream small.
And this is where the beauty of the movie is buried: it is showing life as it really is - maybe the way it is supposed to be, neither glamorous nor perfect but full of boring people with small dreams that occasionally do come true -
If you want a fairy tale with skinny glamorous people for whom miracles happen, go to the great selection of Hollywood movies; if you want a real life fairy tale with real life happening and if you can stand the slow pace, then treat yourself to this one - the ending might even surprise you!Jack Goes Boating - julianrjh27
Jack Goes Boating is one of those movies that one will see once in a while, enjoy watching it and thinking it over, then forget about it a few days later. I don't mean to say that the film is subpar or of poor quality, it just simply isn't very memorable.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is typically terrific, developing his character's sad-sack tendencies without being a caricature, and he is helped tremendously by Amy Ryan. Her performance here is very similar to her Holly on "The Office," and she is very well utilized here. The other two main cast members (whose names I forget) are also very good, seemingly devoid of technique and simply naturalistic in their approach.
Jack Goes Boating is the kind of movie that lives or dies based on the strength of the acting, and Hoffman found himself a capable cast to accompany him on this directorial outing. I would recommend it if you like slice of life, character-driven movies - if you are more interested in action or resolution, you're better off skipping it.
