How Do You Know
From legendary director/writer James L. Brooks comes a humorous and romantic look at the "How Do You Know" question. When everything she's ever known is suddenly taken from her, Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) begins a fling with Matty (Owen Wilson), a major league baseball player and self-centered ladies man. Before their relationship takes off, Lisa meets up with George (Paul Rudd) a straight-arrow businessman facing his own serious issues, both with his father (Jack Nicholson) and the law. Just when everything seems to be falling apart it doesn't.

This film was incredibly disappointing based on some career low performance from Witherspoon and Nicholson, and especially from the director, Brooks. The director’s resume includes classics such as Terms Of Endearment, As Good As It Gets and Broadcast News, but with this film, he fails to capture the sentiment and subtle romantic undertones as his previous work. Witherspoon was miscast as the hard-nosed leader and US softball star, Lisa, because her tough persona never appeared natural. The subplot involving Nicholson and Rudd’s father/son characters was too exaggerated and contributed to my disappointment. In fact, the other primary character was O. Wilson's playboy major league relief pitcher, Matty - another character completely unbelievable. Audiences won't care if the basis of the story is set in such hyperbole for sci-fi or action blockbusters, but most need their romantic comedies to hit closer to home. I will give Brooks kudos for penning one of my favourite lines from a movie recently when Matty responded “Essentially” to Lisa questioning whether they were in a monogamous relationship. We Know Because We've Seen it A Hundred Times - ABC99
Despite two very likeable lead actors "How do you know" is an uneven affair. Reese Witherspoon gets involved in the typical romantic comedy jerk, who she is only with so she can leave them at the end without making the audience feel bad. Paul Rudd, another likeable role, is dealing with his own issues, but never expressing himself in a way that you would expect any normal person to act. It isn't an unpleasant movie. just conventional in all the wrong ways.Don't let the cast fool you - screenname
I like all the actors in this film, but the film is not worth watching. It is a very one dimensional film, there is only one thing going on, and it's not that interesting. And the characters have no personality. They have their roles but no depth, and you find yourself not caring if things work out or not, you just want to turn off the movie.
