Somewhere
Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning star in Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola's witty and moving story about the special bond between a father and his daughter.
Actor Johnny Marco (Dorff) is leading the fast-paced lifestyle of a tabloid celebrity. He's comfortably numb with his life of women and pills when his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Fanning), unexpectedly arrives at his room at Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont hotel. Their time together encourages Johnny to re-question his life in ways he never expected.

So, how much did I enjoy myself watching Somewhere? Yeah, not at all. It's not as if the movie is insubstantial, but I felt that the point would be made, and then the car would drive around the track an additional 5 times. The point would be made, but then we get to sit back and watch the ENTIRE duration of the worst strip show ever. Twice."Somewhere" is an indescribable place, but a beautiful one - napierslogs
In the beginning, "Somewhere" is L.A. as Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) lives it up with fast cars, easy women, and lots and lots of alcohol. The simplistic shots of the film and minimal dialogue belie the depth to which we get to know him. It's quite amusing when his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Elle Fanning), shows up and knows less about his lifestyle than we do.
We very subtly explore the maturation of Johnny as Cleo becomes a fixture in his life. As Johnny grows up and learns about himself, there is a significant amount of substance to the subtlety and simplicity of the film. I relished the lack of story, the slow scenes, and the seemingly meandering directions it took because it allowed me to discover everything that was going on without them having to tell me.
There is more to this film than the lack of nominations suggest and more to the characters than the easy, superficial way to describe them. It is a character study and a father-daughter relationship exploration that offers a little bit of humour and a lot of food for thought that is way more satisfying than the theatre popcorn. In the end, "Somwehere" was more of an indescribable place, but it was beautiful.

Somewhere is a beautiful meditative film about Johnny Marco (played by Stephen Dorff), a lonely, bored, dissolute Hollywood star who, by spending time with his daughter, Cleo (played by Elle Fanning) learns to love again. Elle Fanning is absolutely delightful in the role -- she is so sweet, natural, and at times, charmingly awkward. Her youth and unpretentious beauty are an effective foil to Stephen Dorff's character, who parties hard on a regular basis and looks it. Johnny is in a state of existential ennui; he lacks emotional connection with others and lives a life of instant gratification that is devoid of meaning. When Cleo’s mother leaves Cleo with Johnny for an extended period of time, it gives him the chance to renew his relationship with her and thaw his heart. By learning to love Cleo, Johnny is forced to face the emptiness in his life and decides to change.
