I don't mind these fluffy romantic comedies. Ashton Kutcher is good. His character is cute, romantic, and thoughtful. The extended cast are quirky and funny. Portman's character is HORRIBLE. She's not funny, she's not likeable. Her only real add to the movie is making Kutcher's character look that much better. Any woman that pushes a man around is not cute like a hamster; she's disgusting and violent. I've never watched one of these movies and wanted the guy to find a better quality woman than the love interest but I did in this one. The creators behind No Strings Attached appear to have left out everything necessary for either touching romance or good comedy. Two people agree to have sex with no attached feelings. First, if there are no attached feelings, then from where does the romance blossom? Secondly, even if a premise provides comedic potential, the humour must come from witty dialogue and inserted comedic bits. This had little of either. In fairness, I’m sure there were a few lightly humorous moments but none with staying power. Twenty-four hours after viewing the film, I cannot recall a single one with clarity.
This film’s most glaring weakness was the predictability of its plot. There was not one ounce of doubt about what path this story was following from the very beginning to the bitter end. We always expect such stories to somehow wind their way back to a feel good ending but this one never wavered from the obvious track.
Okay. The movie was surprisingly boring and comes up short on romance and humour but can we at least expect some good life lesson? The story offers no positive point. In fact all the messages it delivers are flawed.
1) Romance blossoms from sex alone.
2) The true feelings of the other party will always be the same as your true feelings even if they are contrary to the ground rules you laid out.
3) A persons feelings toward you remain the same no matter how persistently you direct them down another path.
4) Once you reveal your true feelings, the other party will realize they feel the same way even though they initially agreed not to let that happen and were persistently reminded by you to not let that happen.
The script offered only a few opportunities for actors to demonstrate their craft. Natalie Portman managed to seize a few rare moments to portray a believable level of emotion and Ashton Kuscher delivered about ten seconds worth of meaningful dialogue regarding the superficiality of modern e-communication.cpf - fadartguy
Cute Predictable and Fun. Ashton always seems to play the same characters in movies, the playboy type. Portman on the other hand has become one of my favourite actresses in Hollywood, ever since Black Swan she has won me over. A fun rainy Sunday chick flick movie.
