The Rite
Inspired by true events, this supernatural thriller follows a seminary student (Colin O'Donoghue) sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Only when sent to apprentice with legendary Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who has performed thousand of exorcisms, does his armor of skepticism begin to fall. Drawn into a troubling case that transcends even Father Lucas's skill, the young seminarian glimpses a phenomenon science can't explain or control - and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.

While I am not into scary movies, I found this movie on my list.
I thought it was well done. Based on actual events, I could not help but think how "hollywood" changed the details.
Yes, it was scary but not gory. The acting was good, storyline was good and it did have me captivated right until the end.
For those who like gory movies, this would not be for you.Hopkins is Outstanding - c4th
Anthony Hopkins delivers another outstanding performance, this time as a Catholic exorcist passing off his legacy to a seminary student. The quirk in this story is that his student has doubts about becoming a priest let alone one sanctioned to perform exorcisms. Colin O’Donoghue plays a complex character uncertain about his faith but capable of placing his compassion toward individuals ahead of those doubts in a priestly manner.
There are obvious parallels that can be drawn to The Exorcist but this one is done without any puppets or fake body fluids. Possession is portrayed through the natural contortions of actress Marta Gastini, some subtle facial makeup and the convincing acting of Hopkins and Gastini. By avoiding the pitfalls often created by over exuberant special effects artists, The Rite avoids the absurd and manages to present bizarre but believable behaviour that some may construe as demonic possession and exorcism. Believers and sceptics alike can accept what is presented and enter into debate over their interpretation of it.
More importantly, The Rite takes a much more introspective look at religious beliefs and specifically at belief in demonic possession than any previous movie on this subject. It even takes time to lay out some defining criteria for us. While most get wrapped up in presenting elements of horror and gore, never looking below the surface of the ritual, The Rite reaches at least deep enough to ask some provocative questions. It even questions if such beliefs are detrimental by creating barriers or diversions to legitimate treatment of mental health disorders.
Whether you choose to focus on its story, its characters, the performances from its cast, or its exploration of religion and the supernatural, this thrilling tale about the making of an exorcist has something to offer a wide range of viewers. If looking for horror or a thrill and this title has caught your interest, I say give it a try.Great Acting - A Chilling Movie - Well Worth Watching! - Filmaholic
Anthony Hopkins gives a stellar performance. In fact it is on par with his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.
The story keeps you riveted from start to finish. It is one of those films that you have to watch attentively to follow.
I would strongly recommend you watch this if you like horror films with a solid plot.
Well worth watching. Rent it today!
