A Summer in Genoa
Two-time Oscar nominee Colin Firth turns in a riveting performance as a widower desperately trying to hold his family together after tragedy threatens to tear them apart. Searching for a fresh start, Joe (Firth) moves with his two daughters from Chicago to the Italian town of Genoa. This is what Michael Winterbottom does! - Mano
I am surprised that others were very critical of this movie. This is typical of Winterbottom. He takes usually the unusual route to make a point! If you expect beginning, middle and the end of grief reaction, then you are going to be disappointed! He does give an in deapth view of grief and once can see the pain in everyone manifesting in different ways.
Unlike another reviewer I found the kids acting really good. Now that King's Speech has won him the Oscar, it is different for Colin Firth. But this was made before King's Speech. He has always been a good actor.
If only to see Genoa, this is worth renting. The Film Lacks Purpose - newdaysof
I like Colin Firth and some of the various locations around Genoa were interesting, but it was not enough to make an enjoyable film.
Colin Firth plays a father who is trying to raise two daughters after the sudden death of his wife. The premise is sort of a cliche and it's been overused in too many other films. There is a bit of conflict between him and his daughters, a bit of drama, but not much else. Katherine Keener has a small role, but she doesn't really act - she sort of just plays herself, like she does in all her other films.
And of course, like so many other stupid Hollywood films these days, there is a vomit scence. Christ!! Why do so many films have to have a graphic vomit scene!! It's so stupid and disgusting!! The film just sort of leaves a bad taste in your mouth.numbness - fadartguy
Colin Firth is one of my favourite actors of all time. However, I felt numb through this whole movie. Very very poor acting from the child actors and Keener should just stop acting and get a job at a Coffee shop or something, I am not sure what Hollywood sees in this lifeless actress. Very disapointing on the whole of this movie. A movie that should have never been made starring Colin Firth, what were you thinking Colin.
