Girls' Gross Out Humour - Mookie
This is a good comedy but what makes me sad is that it just proves females can do gross out humour just like guys. I prefer smart humour or at least humour that doesn't involve people acting drunk, like idiots, or crapping all over the place. Okay yes, the grossest scene did make me laugh since it was played so well by the actors but I felt bad about laughing so it was a shame-laugh :). My biggest complaint is the main character is so damn unlikeable and such an idiot that it is only the fact I love the actress so much (Wiig) that I could bear to watch her. There isn't even really much of a redemption for her - she just stops being such an idiot long enough for her friends and her rom-com mate to like her again. That was also a problem - Wiig's character went through the paint by numbers rom-com two step (I like you, I hate you, I like you again but now you hate me, I win you back). In the end, it did make me laugh and a lot of the humour was new and I do applaud the fact it is a comedy that targets females and showcases some brilliant comedic actresses. Oh, BTW - they cut the Paul Rudd scene - see the deleted scenes to get a taste of my fav comedic actor.Very funny - Treyab73
I think I had thought this would be along the line of the Hangover based on the hype, but it wasn't. It is a very funny movie but the storyline is more serious about a down on her luck woman whos self sabataging behaviour leads to misery.
The beginning is hysterical and then end gets more serious, but it definitely worth the 4 stars. The lead character is adorably funny. It was a great date movie. And come on, the food poisoning scene was frickin hilarious. lmao. If that is off your raunchy scale, stick to Disney."Gut-bustingly funny"?? - cathyottawa
I don't think so.
This movie suffered from comparisons to The Hangover, and reviews that puzzlingly gushed about how incredibly funny it was.
I found this film to be far more poignant than funny, and far more endearing than likely intended.
The film advertised - "Crazy bridal shower! Hilarious bachelorette party! Kooky characters! Raunchy comedy!" - was not the film I just watched, which was about a lonely, depressed, down on her luck girl (Kristen Wiig's Annie), trying to reconnect with her best friend, find love, and put her shambles of a life back together.
That's not to say it was a bad film, but it certainly was not the film I was expecting.
Wiig wrote the script with a friend, and says they literally bought a book about how to write a screenplay and went from there. Their inexperience shows - the story feels a little half-baked.
It's like they tried to write an anti-rom/com, but ended up with one in spite of themselves. This is really a romantic comedy in disguise, but Wiigs romance feels underdeveloped. I wanted more of that story, and more of her character.
This does have humour, but I found it to be more subtle than raunchy (except for one scene), and more dry and witty than laugh out loud hilarious.
I did love that this was about thirty somethings that actually looked their age, and the dialogue was great and rang true. I just wanted it to either be funnier, or conversely, not be afraid to explore the romance more.
Oh, and make no mistake, this IS a chick flick (not that that should be seen as a derogatory statement.....).
