The Smurfs
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, they're forced through a portal, out of their world and into ours, landing in the middle of New York's Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

For our family, comprised of 5, 10 and a 49 year old, this film did the trick. Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris are hilarious. That's good because I got tired of those Smurf characters. But my kids never tired of them and are still talking about which was their favourite, which one is like them, and which ones they need to add. And, of course, they are making up their own smurf-alicious words.Cute - cloicker
Who doesn't love the Smurfs?? Nicely done movie in the sense of bringing the cartoon world together with the real world. My only criticism is that the "dark" part with the wizard seemed to take up to much of the movie. They could have done more humourous scenes with the Smurfs instead of some of it. But our whole family did enjoy this movie.Dull and Often Grotesque - filmcmnt
Let me preface this by saying that my 9 year old son loved this movie and watched it twice with pleasure. He's the target audience, so I guess it's successful. Since I grew up with the Smurf show in the 1980s though, is it too much to ask that I as an adult not find the whole thing tediously overlong and visually grotesque? The most shocking part of this film which made me really uneasy is that Hank Azaria is playing Gargamel as a sterotypical evil stage Jewish caricature of the 19th century/Fagin variety, with prosthetic buck teeth, hooked nose, and a distinctly Eastern European accent. Given that Azaria comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish background, you would think he would have more sense than to channel this miserable sterotype. Reading online, I see that the original cartoon Gargamel has also been accused of being an anti-Semitic stereotype, so I guess maybe Azaria is being faithful to the source. At any rate, if you're older than 10, I would not subject yourself to this. Rent the original cartoons.
