When I ziiped that movie, I was expecting an action pact and very graphic movie. The action sequences were great and very graphic as expected, but there was not enough of them. The movie started slow and it took a long time for the action to pick up. Overall good but not great. An excellent fable - Morpheus
I don't normally write reviews, but after looking at a few for this movie, and almost not renting this movie because of them, I felt I had to write another review to go alongside the other reviews.
This movie reminded me of movies like 300, Sin City, The Spirit and The Matrix. It combines elements of all of them, specifically the cartoon-esque cut scenes and surreal fight scenes. The setting can best be described as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, with ninjas in a Cowboy Western setting .... the effect works. And this was before Cowboys and Aliens came out! And contrary to another review, yes, there is a plot. It's not very elaborate, but it is more than enough to drive the storyline. The movie has some recognizable actors, including Geoffrey Rush and Kate Bosworth. This is not some Grade B movie. It does what it does, which is entertain with a good fable, and it does it well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.No plot but very stylish... - cheapohubby
It reminded me a lot of SuckerPunch; not much of a plot, but the photography and special effects were cool!
There's plenty of blood and gore. I found the sword fights were a bit simplistic, but probably accurate to the samurai way of battle. Basically the two opponents pass each other; there's a few sword swings, and somebody falls down dead. This isn't one of those martial arts movies where the people whale away at each other for ten or twenty minutes.
Recommendation wise; just don't go into it expecting a lot of story. Enjoy the surreal photography, and maybe keep a tally of how many people die on each side. It's not a terrible waste of time to watch.
